The use of permanent hair dyes has been linked to an increased risk of breast cancer in women of all ages, but the risk is particularly high for black women due to their higher exposure to these chemicals.

Hair Dye and Breast Cancer Risk
  • Black women who regularly dye their hair with permanent hair dyes have a significantly higher risk of breast cancer. This is due to their higher exposure to the chemicals used in these products.

Brands that had only one of these chemicals were given a Tier 2 designation. Brands that had two or more of these chemicals were given a Tier 3 designation. The Non-Toxic Black Beauty Project also provided guidelines for manufacturers and retailers to follow when creating and selling safer products.
